Influence of the housing system on chemical composition of bones of layers

Leg bones and wing bones of layers from battery cages, deep litter and free range housing systems were studied. In dry bone mass no significant differences between investigated housing systems were established. Regarding ash, Ca and P content, in dry bone mass, the lowest values were established for the cage system, certain differences between housing systems were significant (ash percentage, Ca in dry bone mass of the humerus, and ash percentage in dry bone mass of the ulna), and very significant (ash percentage, Ca and P in dry bone mass of the femur). No regular connection between the housing systems and Ca and P content in bone ashes of layer was established. It was conducted that ash content, Ca and P in dry bone mass was proportional in regard to the possibility of motion of layers in certain housing systems, which was reflected on certain biochemical chracteristics of bones. Ca and P content in ashes was indicator of the bone firmness of layers.
