Effects of air pollution on ecophysiological and anatomical characteristics of Acer negundo and Acer pseudoplatanus
1994
Macukanovic, M. (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Belgrade (Yugoslavia)) | Drazic, G. | Stevanovic, B.
The introduced boxelder (Acer negundo) and autochthonous sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) are commonly grown trees along the streets, in parks and squares of Belgrade (Yugoslavia). The injuries of these trees, their faster senescence and perishing, in the urban area, are caused by synergistic effects of air pollutants and general climatic conditions in and around Belgrade. The acute and chronic damages in both species were established on the basis of diurnal and seasonal variations of chlorophyll content and changes in leaf anatomical structure. Acer pseudoplatanus was established as more resistant species although the pollution damages were observed in both trees studied.
