Study of gipsy moth parasites from the genus Apanteles (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)

In natural populations of gipsy moth in Serbia (Yugoslavia) 7 Apanteles species were discovered - 5 of them solitary and 2 gregorious. It is very important that Apanteles species appear early in the spring reducing young caterpillars before they provoke big damages in the forests. The most effective species for biological control is Apanteles solitarius. It has 2 generations in the nature and in the laboratory 7 generations can be reared yearly. It is also important that Apanteles solitarius produces both diapausing and nondiapausing cocoons still in the first generation, what enables stocking of cocoons, which will be used in biological control, and ensures the continuity of cocoon production during the whole year.
