Progress in immunology, molecular genetics, automation and microelectronic-s has spurted the development of a large number of rapid methods for the detection of foodborne pathogens. This paper presents results of comparative studies of some rapid methods available ready-for-use test kits, using naturally contaminated food samples. Most satisfactory results for Salmonella detection were obtained with test kits from Transia and Lumac. The kit from Tecra performed best for detection of Listeria, while tests from Gene-Trak and bioMerieux were excellent in rapid detection of Listeria monocytogenes.
