Rural geography requires a constant reflexion on the rural notion itself. Not only to discuss if rurality opposed to urbanity yet exists. But because the confrontation of the ideological and the real level of the two terms, following a methodology which is described in the paper, opens on a new approach of rural identities in Europe and their variation in time and space.
