Recent non-marine Ostracoda (Crustacea) from Yobe State, Northern Nigeria

Ostracods were collected from 11 localities in 8 waterbodies from Yobe State, northern Nigeria. Ecological variables, including water chemistry and habitat information, were also determined for each site. Nineteen ostracod species were encountered. The most characteristic feature of the present faunas is that they are adapted to temporary lake or pond environments. Other important factors controlling species distributions are aquatic macrophyte cover, water source and predation. The variations in water chemistry encountered in this study, however, do not appear to have a significant effect on faunal composition.
