Methods specially adapted for root analysis should help to determine the role of the root as a source of water and nutrient supply and the part it plays in the transit of assimilants. The fibrous root system should either be separated from the soil or observed in situ so that a quantitative analysis can be made. Separation through washing means that the monolith or core method has to be used. Separation is carried out in the field when the excavation and wall profile methods are used. The excavation and wall profile methods also make it possible to view the root system in its entirety. The other methods used determine the spatial distribution of the fibrous root system in the soil. Rhizotrones enable root growth to be observed in situ. A time-series analysis determines not only the development of roots but their disintegration as well and this in turn could determine the results of root system assimilation in the future.
