The suppression of clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae Wor.) on cauliflower after the addition of biowaste composts to the potting soil

In a growth chamber experiment the influence of biowaste composts (Humotex, GFT and groencompost) on clubroot on cauliflower was evaluated after addition of compost to the potting soil. All treatments, except one control treatment were infested with 10 million spores of P. brassicae per ml potting soil. A significant suppression of clubroot was found for higher doses of compost. The addition of 40 per cent (vol.) GFT-compost to the potting mixture results in a almost total protection against P. brassicae. The maturity of the compost had a clear influence on the disease development of clubroot. The addition of Humotex or a mixture of GFT- and greencompost with a high maturity to the potting substrate resulted in a lower protection against clubroot in comparison with Humotex, GFT- or greencompost with a lower maturity. The content of Cd, Zn, B, total and extractable Ca raised with the compost doses. Significant negative correlations were found between this elements and the disease-index. At the end of the experiment all plants grown on the infested potting soil without compost enrichment were dying. Field experiments will be conducted to evaluate the possibilities of biowaste compost to suppress clubroot.
