Development of the fibrous root system and its relation to nutrient uptake and growth of sugar beet

In 2 field trials near Goettingen in 1992 and 1993 investigations were carried out concerning the development of the fibrous root system, tops, beet and nitrogen-uptake of sugar-beet and the nitrate-content of the soil (in/between rows) during the season. The root system increased with high growth rates from June to August; it concerned root length and surface area up to 15 km per square m resp. 11 square m per square m maximum rooting depth 2.8 m, proportion of root length in 0 to 30 cm depth about 60 percent, root diameter in 0 to 30 cm on average 0.25 mm and in 30 to 150 cm up to 0.39 mm and specific root length up to 170 m per g. Tops and beet increased up to 250 g dry matter per plant, root up to 10 g per plant, with a ratio of tops plus beet to root up to 40 to 1 in November. Parallel to root development and until August N-uptake increased up to 200 kg per ha (maximum 5 kg per ha and day, NO3-influx maximum 60 mol x 10-14 per cm and sec) and nitrate content in the soil decreased to less than 50 kg per ha, earlier than in between rows.
