From 1991 to 1993, 60 beet lots were processed to sugar and molasses in a pilot plant using sugar technological standardized methods. Sugar loss in molasses was determined and the technical quality of sugar beet reevaluated. 15 beet lots came from factory yards, 45 were produced specifically by variation of variety, fertilizing and plant population density in different areas of Germany. Compared to recent research, the composition of the beet lots was nearly identical for the content of alpha amino-N, distinctly lower for the content of potassium and sodium and higher in sugar concentration. The standardized loss of sugar in molasses (SMV) was defined by regression statistics: SMV=0.12 (potassium + sodium) + 0.24 amino-N + 0.48. Compared to recent research the valuation of amino-N is distinctly higher and potassium and sodium lower. The SMV enables a comparison of technical quality between beet lots, a calculation of the sugar gain of a specific factory is not possible.
