This work was conducted to determine whether the physiological quality of seeds could be rapidly evaluated using the potassium leakage test, which was correlated with other measurements of seed vigour. Four lots each of two cultivars (IAC-8 and IAC-15) of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seeds were evaluated for percentage germination, first count, accelerated aging, classification of seedling vigour, tetrazolium, and field seedling emergence tests. In addition, studies on potassium leakage were conducted with samples of selected nondamaged and pure seeds. The amount of potassium leakage was evaluated in a flame photometer after 60, 90, and 120 min. imbibition at 30 deg C. The results confirmed that evaluations of pure seeds (without previous selection) at 90 min. were suitable for the identification of soybean seed lots with different levels of vigour and field emergence potential, thus providing a simple and rapid method for vigour evaluation
