Present knowledge of the boar semen as one of the possible routes of PRRS spreading, the influence of experimental vaccination on the virus shedding by semen, and transfer of the virus by semen to the sow are described. Following the first PRRS virus detection in the Czech Republic, results of the serological survey in breeding boars are presented along with the outcome of RT-PCR method using virus RNA in seropositive boars. Out of 1,517 breeding boars 19 (1.25 %) showed specific antibodies. Virus RNA was detected in the blood serum of 10 seropositive boars out of 250 examined animals using the RT-PCR assay. One boar was both serum and semen positive as late as 42 days after the first serum detection of antibodies.
