Effect of catch crops and fall tillage on the crop yield in the rotation of cereals

In 1983-1994 stationary field trials were carried out in the Experimantal station of Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture. The effect of cereal and cruciferous catch crops both on green fodder and green manure, the effect of fertilization with straw or manure have been studied. Stubble breaking and spraying the stubble with herbicides on the yield of the main crops in rotation of cereals have also been studied. The above mentioned four-member rotation crops have grown yearly since 1982: vetch-oat mixture for green fodder, winter wheat, spring barley, spring oats. Italian ryegrass was grown as a catch undercrop. Cruciferous crops such as spring rape, oil radish, white mustard were sown directly onto the stubble after harvesting the main cereals in crop rotation. It has been determined that in the rotation of cereals catch crops increase the yields of test crops and the total crop rotation productivity. Cruciferous catch crops for green fodder increased the yields of the main crop in crop rotation most of all. The latter crops in rotation of cereals demonstrated a significantly greater efficiency than Italian ryegrass grown for the same purpose
