Reduced depth of tillage and its effect on soil agrochemical properties, weed level and grain yield

Conventional mode of ploughing at the depth of 0.22...0.24 metres is expensive and labour-consuming in Latvia. In world tillage practise attempts have been made to replace ploughing by subsurface cultivation, rototilling, chisel ploughing as well as by reduced depth of ploughing. Since 1983 Dept. of Soil Management of Latvia University of Agriculture has been engaged in research. These studies show that changes in organic matter content between variants of soil tillage are insignificant. Diverse effect of studied soil tillage systems on grain yield level, amount of weed plants and their ratio in grain crop stands in tillering was not stated. Reduced soil tillage system is feasible in ameliorated soil free from perennial weeds
