Correlation between yield, morphological and biochemical characteristics of the garden pea and its importance for breeding work

Yield is determined by structure elements complexly not individually. Correlations between morphological and biological characteristics of 152 varieties were studied in a collection trial. On the basis of the trial results and knowledge of breeding work up, the following can be concluded: short stemmed and semi-high varieties are higher yielding. High yielding plants have only 1...2 better filled pods per fruitstalk. Varieties with 7...8 seeds per pod on average, are higher yielding. Yield is influenced by 1000 seed weight. The varieties with 1000 seed weight of 240...300 g are higher yielding. Seed yield is influenced by the number of fertile nodes (thus pods) per plant, which is considerably influenced by growing conditions. The varieties with a number of pods of 8...14 were higher yielding. Time of ripening is influenced by length of the period between germination and blooming and it depends a great deal on the variety
