Association of oil yield with some agronomic traits in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) varieties

An experiment consisting of twenty sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) varieties from seven different geographic origins of the world was conducted at Awasa and Arsi-Negelle Research Centers in 1992/93 in randomized complete block design with three replications. The objective of this study was to determine the associations between oil yield and some agronomic traits so that the major traits of importance could be identified to serve as basis for a selection program since information in this aspect was scanty under our conditions. Correlation analysis revealed that oil yield was highly and significantly correlated with seed yield per plant, number and percentage of filled seeds per head, seed oil content, 1000-seed weight, total above ground dry matter and stem diameter; and significantly with harvest index. Of all traits studied, seed yield per plant and oil content exerted the highest direct and indirect effects on oil yield followed by number of filled seeds per head and 1000-seed weight. Oil yield in sunflower is, therefore, largely determined by seed yield per plant and seed content. Hence, to bring about improvement of oil yield in sunflower due attention should be given to these traits.
