Tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter] genotypes with high total protein and basic amino acids, including lysine, were identified from over three-thousand germplasm lines using Dye Binding Capacity (DBC) and Near Infra Red (NIR) methods of analysis. The DBC and NIR values in tef varied amongst regions. Genotypes that had high basic amino acids, including lysine and total protein, were mostly found within tef collections obtained from Gojam region. However, such superior genotypes were not restricted to one region. Total protein and DBC data implied the existence of multiple selection processes in tef population sampled from the various regions. The DBC values per percent total protein were negatively correlated and such correlations became less pronounced at higher values of total protein, implying the possibility of selecting for high protein content without adversely affecting the amino acid composition. Models that gave the best fit for DBC-protein relationship at various classes of total protein were determined.
