Phenotypic and genotypic variances and correlations in bambara groundnut [Vigna subterranea]

Ten local accessions of bambara groundnut were grown over a two-year period to determine variability and correlation among various agronomic characters. A randomized complete block design was used in both experiments. A large proportion of the observed variation in pods per plant, 100-seed weight, seeds per plant, leaf area, number of leaves per plant and canopy spread was attributable to genotypic differences among the accessions. Generally, the genotypic correlations were higher than the phenotypic correlations. Direct and indirect effects of seed yield components on seed yield were similar for both bunch and spreading types. However, the relationship between pod yield and leaf number appeared to depend on the degree of determinacy. The high heritability estimates indicated the possibility of increasing yield through selection among accessions
