Model calculations for optimizing breeding schemes in the Karagouniko milk sheep. II. Results and discussion

The efficiency of alternative selection schemes, suited to the purebred karagouniko milk sheep, was evaluation by means of model calculations. Selection of breeding rams on dam's records and of breeding ewes on own performance has proved to be efficient. When the nucleus has a size of 10% of the total population (20000 ewes), which reflects the present situation, predicted annual selection response and net returns were found 333 drs and 1687 drs per ewe, respectively. It is concluded that the optimum selection scheme, both in genetic and economic terms, is obtained when the nucleus size is 20% of the population, the proportion of the test matings 50% of the nucleus and the number of daughters per test ram 60. The predicted annual selection response and the net returns of that selection scheme were found 574 drs and 3188 drs per ewe, respectively.
