The potato eelworms (nematodes) present a very significant danger to the potato production of any country that can be solved only locally and for only a given period by producing potato resistant to the local nematodes. Two of the most feared potato eelworms (Globodera rostochiensis Skarbilow/Woll. and Globodera pallida Stone) are remarkably similar, so their differentation based on morphological characters is very complicated and time-consuming. At the Department of Nematology (Agricultural University, Wageningen) an indirect serological detection method (Elisa technique) has been developed and adapted to Hungarian circumstances. Special monoclonal antibodies have been produced against the thermostable protein antigens of nematode cysts that are 1. Specific for the nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida 2. Specific only for G. pallida. In course of the experiments it turned out that the method can be used with the required sensitivity to detect both qualitatively and quantitatively Globodera species. The biotechnical technique is fast and relatively simple. It present a reliable method to detect these dangerous pests that are on the lists of quarantine pests of many countries
