Microbial pathogenicity factors as parts of global regulatory networks
1996
Hacker, J. (Univ., Wurzburg (Germany). Institut fur Molekulare Infektionsbiologie)
Numerous prokaryotic genes are not expressed constitutively but rather respond to environmental conditions or internal signals. Thus, metabolic properties, structures of the coil wall and also pathogenicity factors are regulated by environmental signals via certain repressor and activator molecules. As shown for a number of serious pathogens, such as Vibrio cholerae, Bordetella pertussis, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium and others, the expression of virulence factors is organized in so-called regulatory networks
