The horse-chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella Deschka et Dimic 1986, Lep.: Lithocolletidae)

The outbreak of Cameraria ohridella Deschka et Dimic, that had begun quite unexpectedly in 1994 in Hungary continued in 1995. Present paper reports on studies carried out in west Hungary (Keszthely). The author compared in her surveys the numbers the pupal chambers completed in the autumn of 1994 and the ones of adults emerged in the spring of 1995; she established that the overwintering has bean "successful" to 59 percent, with a mortality 2,8 percent caused by parasitoids. From among the parasitoids the hymenopterous species Pnigalio pectinicornis Linnaeus (Hym.: Eulophidae) was found dominant (55 percent). The larvae of C. ohridella have 3 pairs of abdominal legs and develop through 5 instars. In the year 1995, when the vegetation period was somewhat cooler than the average, 3 generations developed; the development of each generation took about 35-50 days. The swarming peaks could be observed at the begin of May, July and by early August. Based on regular surveys of leaf miners the species overwinters under Hungarian conditions exclusively in pupal form in fallen leaves. The damage of C. ohridella was already 30-40 by early June on chestnut trees with heavy infestation; the damage then increased to 80.90 until early August of 1995
