Theoretical and practical aspects of production of transgenic farm animals
1995
Vajta, G. (Embryo Technology Center Danish Institute of Animal Science, Tjele (Denmark))
Fifteen years after the first successful gene transfer into mammals, as a result of development of molecular biology, embryology and biochemistry, commercial production of transgenic farm animals seems to be an achievable goal. Work is focused to increase productivity, resistance against certain diseases and to obtain materials for human medicine. In the latter field first products are expected in the forthcoming years. Transgenic research is most intensive on cattle, where highest profit is expected. The aim of this paper is to review results obtained on the field of changing genetical code, discuss problems and possible solutions
