Investigations on the relationship of meat production characteristics to stress susceptibility in cattle

In an attempt to establish figures on the relationship between performance traits such as ADWG (average daily weight gain), amount and quality of meat produced and physiological response to exogenic ACTH (corticotrophin) challenge in the initial phase of fattening, an experiment has been conducted with 12 Black Holstein-Friesian and 13 Red Holstein-Friesian bull calves under loose housing conditions using roughage based fattening diets. Basal values were determined in jugular blood samples collected prior to i. m. administration of 60-120 IU ACTH (0.313-0.628 IU/kg LW, EXACTHIN inj., Richter G. Vegyeszeti Gyar Rt., Budapest). Repeated samples were collected after 2 and 4 hours, respectively. Even though a positive relationship was found between the change in plasma cortisol level and ADWG during the rearing period (r=0.35), the correlation coefficient did not seem to reach a significant level of probability. Response in cholesterol also suggested close and significant connection (r=0.61, P0.01) with the growth rate of the calves.
