Genetic polymorphisms in Iranian domestic sheep breeds 2nd Paper: alpha 1 B-glycoprotein (PO2) and Transferrins (Tf)

Genetic variation of Transferrins (Tf) and alpha 1 B-glycoprotein (PO2) in ten domestic sheep breeds of Iran were studied. The allelic frequencies and indexes of heterozygosity for each of the systems and breeds were tabulated, and graphically compared. We also found three new alleles contributing to the variation of alpha 1 B-glycoprotein in Iranian sheep breeds. New alleles were preliminary named as alleles I, J and K. Electrophoretical mobility of this protein at alkaline pH following immunoblotting was studied. The mobility of I variant was between variants F and S while the mobility of variant J was slower than the variant S. The mobility of variant K was even slower than all other variants. The exact inheritance of these protein variants should be investigated using more samples and family data. Analysis of the data for heterozygosity showed that Iranian sheep breeds are more heterozygous at the Tf locus (eleven alleles were present in different combinations) than for the PO2 system (only five alleles were found). Transferrin alleles B, C, D and A respectively were the most frequent alleles in the breeds tested. Concerning PO2 the allele S was the most frequent in all the breeds and alleles I, J and K were present only in some of the breeds
