Influence of soil water content and nitrogen application on the growth and production of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties IR-64

A factorial experiment was conducted in the glasshouse to study the efficiency of soil water (60, 80 and 100 percent field capacity) and nitrogen application (150, 200 and 250 kg urea/ha) on the growth and production of upland rice IR-36, with three replicates. It was found that soil water to 100 percent field capacity (FC) had a significant (P0,05) and highly significant (P0,01) effect on the vegetative growth i.e. length of plant, number of leaf, number of tiller and leaf area. The number of grains/panicle, dry weight of 100 grains, fresh weight of plant and yield/ha were maximum when the soil water was 80 percent FC. The number of grains/panicle and the fresh weight of yield/ha were maximum when 200 kg urea/ha was applied, and the leaf area was maximum with 250 kg urea. Furthermore, the yield was maximum when the soil water was 80 percent FC with 200 kg urea/ha. There was no significant interaction between soil water and nitrogen application in their effect on the growth and production of the rice
