Effect of shading on growth and yield of lowland garlic

The development of garlic cultivation under lowland area is increasing every year, however the low product quality is still a major constraint for its development. It was also identified that the vegetative growth period of some varieties under lowland conditions are very short compared to the highland, which might be related with the effects of high temperature and light intensity. This experiment was conducted in Jatibarang-Brebes at the altitude of 15 meters above sea level, starting from June to September 1991. The objective was to study the response of two varieties of garlic on shading application under lowland condition, in terms of growth and yield size of bulb. The treatments consisted of two factors which were two varieties of garlic (A-factor as main plot) and six types of shading application including control (B-factor as sub-plot). A split-plot design with three replications was employed. The results showed that shading application gave significant effect on the growth and yield of garlic under lowland condition of Jatibarang-Brebes. Shading application with 30 percent plastic screen gave the highest yield of big bulb size for both varieties of Lumbu Putih and Lumbu Kuning/Jatibarang. However, intercropping systems with corn and hot pepper as shading alternatives need further investigation to find proper type and application of shading plant for lowland garlic
