Effect of methylthiouracil administration on the thyroidal hormones, sexual compartment, reaction times and semen characteristics in bulls
1993
Shuber, A.M.H. (Baghdad Univ. Coll. of Agric. (Iraq))
Three adult Friesian bulls were used to study the effect of the methylthiouracil (MTU) administration on the thyroid hormones level; sexual compartment; sexual behavior and semen quality. Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine levels in the blood plasma were lowered within three weeks after daily administration of (MTU) to the non-detectable level. Treatment had no statistical effect on testicular measurements and caused longer reaction time. There were no changes in the ejaculate volume, an increase in sperm concentration, sperm number in the ejaculate and sperm defects. Treatment caused a reduction in the number of the protoplasmic droplets ported by the spermatozoa and a reduction in the fructose content in the seminal plasma.
