Weeds of irrigation canals of rice fields in Guilan Province

Most of the previous researchs on weeds in Iran have been done on the problem of field crops and orchards. For the first time, weed problem of irrigation canals, specially in rice fields of Guilan province, has been studied during 1993-1994. These studies revealed that, from 42 species identified in irrigation systems, 14 species were aquatic and semi- aquatic weeds, the most frequent of them being: Cyperus longus L., Paspalum paspaloides (Michx) Scribner, Mentha aquatica L., Lycopus europaeus L., Alisma plantago- aquatica L. and Polygonum hydropiper L., others (11 species) were mesophyles and terrestrials and often occured on margines of the canals. The most important weeds of this type were: Conyzanthus squamatus (Spreng) Tamash. Bidens tripartia L., Xanthium strumarium L., and Plantago media L.
