Synthesis and herbicidal activity of sulfonylureas SL-950 and its related compounds

As a results of years of studies on pyridylsulfonylureas we have found that novel compounds bearing substituted carbamoyl moiety on the 3-position of the pyridine ring were quite safe for corn (Zea mays). After studying the structure-activity relationships of substituents on the carbamoyl moiety and the heterocycles attached to the urea bridge, we confirmed that 2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-ylcarbamolylsulfamoyl)-N,N-dimet hylnicotinamide, SL-950 (nicosulfuron) is the most effective against both grass weeds including perennial species and broadleaves at 40 to 80 g a.i./ha. SL-950 is now under development by Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha, Ltd. We established four novel routes to the syntheses of the key intermediates, 2-sulfamoyl-N-substituted nicotinamides
