Studies on echinococcosis in Australia, 4: Prevalence of larval echinococcosis in feral pigs in Australia

Ninety five feral pigs shot in North Queensland were examined for echinococcosis. Echinococcal lesions were found in the lungs of 18 (18.9%) out of the feral pigs examined and in the livers of 3 (16.7%) out of the 18 feral pigs having lesions in the lungs. A large cyst (about 5 cm in diameter) having an abundant protoscoleces was found in the lung of one pig. Echinococcal cysts having small number of protoscoleces were found in the lungs of 5 (27.8%) out of the 18 feral pigs having lesions in the lung. All cysts from other cases were sterile. four feral pigs in Yass and Wee Jasper, New South Wales were not infected with E. granulosus. However, echinococcal lesions were found in the lungs of 2 and the liver of one out of 3 feral pigs shot in Bond State forest, New south Wales. The echinococcal cysts were sterile.
