Spatial variability of physical properties of two soil types

The spatial variability of bulk density and water content was examined in terms of the probability density functions, semivariograms, and autocorrelation functions for two soil types: one volcanic and one sandy soil. Bulk densities and water contents were measured in a field plot of 12- x 12-m for the volcanic soil and in a 6- x 14-m plot for the sandy soil. Measurements were made by dividing each plot into equal 2- x 2-m grids and sampling soil cores within each grid. The data of bulk density were found to be normally distributed for both soil types. Analyses of semivariograms for the volcanic soil exhibited that spatial structure existed, and the average range of influence was 7m for both bulk density and water content. For the sandy soil, water content displayed a range of 8m, but bulk density was lack of spatial structure. The spatial variability of soil moisture characteristic curve was also studied by sampling cores randomly within each test plot and it was found that water content at a given suction for the volcanic soil varied in a wider range than for the sandy soil
