Breeding of "Kita-asahi" silage corn [Zea mays] and its characteristics

A new silage corn cultivar "Kita-asahi", developed at the Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment Station, sapporo, Japan was registered as Norin Kou No.31 Silage corn and released by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1990. "Kita-asahi" is a double cross hybrid of 2 dent and 2 flint-type inbred lines, (914-2 x CM174) x (Ho3 x Ho4). Two inbred lines, 914-2 and CM174, were introduced from the U.S.A. in 1977, courtesy of Dr. J.H.Lonquist of Wisconsin University. Ho3 and Ho4 were inbred lines bred up at the Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment Station. The major agronomic characteristics of the new cultivar follow. The maturity is medium in Hokkaido. The time of harvesting for silage is slightly later than that of "C535" and slightly earlier than of "Buffalo". Dry matter and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield of "Kita-asahi" are higher than of "C535" and slightly lower than of "Buffalo" in Hokkaido. The lodging resistance of "Kita-asahi" is superior to that of "Hokuyu" and "C535", and similar to that of "Buffalo". The resistance of "Kita-asahi" to Exerohilum turcicum is similar to that of "C535" and "Buffalo". The resistance to Bipolaris maydis is also similar to that of "C535" and "Buffalo". The seed productivity of the parent lines is moderate and the production of the hybrid seed is about 4.2 t/ha. "Kita-asahi" is well adapted to the inland district of Abashiri and to central Tokachi where the climate is f favorable, and to the northern district of central Hokkaido
