A new poisonous species of Boletus from Japan

A poisonous bolete mushroom, Boletus venenatus, occurring in subalpine coniferous (Abies, Picea and Tsuga) forests from late July to early October in Hokkaido and central Honshu is described and illustrated as a new species. It causes gastrointestinal symptoms when consumed. In addition to tits habitat (coniferous forests) and poisonous nature, this species is characterized by its large basidiocarp size (pileus up to 15 cm broad), a yellowish brown pileus of which the surface is velutinous at first, becoming subtomentose, yellow flesh and tubes which weakly change to blue when sectioned, and a finely furfuraceous pale yellow stipe. Boletus venenatus is closely related to B. fragrans, B. impolitus, B. huronensis and B. subcinnamomeus and all of these species seem to form a natural group within the genus Boletus
