Morphological and genetical differences in the wild populations of Apodemus speciosus separated by Chuo Express Way were investigated to check the effect of construction of the express way on the wild small mammals. Results obtained were summarized as follows. 1) In all of seven areas investigated, more number of males were caught than that of females and more number of animals were caught in the mountain side than in the town one. 2) No difference was found in the relative weight of major organs such as heart and liver between males and females and between animals of the separated populations in any areas. 3) Differences in the incidence of phenotypes of Akp and Idh isozymes from the kidney were found in the separated populations in two areas. 4) No difference was found in the frequencies of the chromosomal numbers (2n=46, 47 and 48) of the separated populations in any areas. 5) These results indicate the wild population of small mammals are affected by the construction of the express way
