Tilapia research and development in the Philippines

The tilapia cultured in freshwater and brackishwater is an important foodfish in the Philippines. Research and development on the species since the mid-70s have led to commercialization of tilapia production technologies, resulting in dramatic increase in its production. The Philippines is at present the second largest producer of farmed tilapia in the world. A review of the government policies and programs that have supported the tilapia farming industry in the Philippines is presented. Future research and development needs are indicated
