Farm-level corn storage structures

Three models of low-cost corn storehouses or bodegas were constructed and tested at the University of Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center, Kabacan, Cotabato [Philippines]. The basic design consists of a cubical body surmounted by a pyramidal roof. Maximum holding capacity of these bodegas is 17 cubic meters. Model 1 has ferrocement sides and GI roofing; Model 2 uses plaited straw sides and nipa roofing; Model 3 makes use of vertically spaced bamboo slats for the sides and cogon for the roofing. All models extensively utilize coco lumber and are fully enclosed and ventilated. Sliding doors are provided which may be secured by padlocks. Performance criteria employed were the following: a.) protection from adverse weather conditions; b.) in-store product quality; c.) protection from insects and pests; and d.) economic feasibility. Based on these, Model 1 outranked Models 2 and 3. Model 2 was found to be fairly satisfactory for average conditions
