Enzymatic bleaching of abaca (Musa textilis, Nee) sulfite pulp using Phanerochaete chrysosporium ligninase

Ligninase (lignin peroxidase) enzyme was produced by a nitrosoguanidine mutant of Phanerochaete chrysosporium NRRL 6370 and used to pretreat sulfite pulp from abaca (Musa textilis, Nee) fibers prior to bleaching with hypochlorite. Enzyme pretreatment reduced the lignin content of the sulfite-pulp as indicated by the kappa number of 1.04-1.35. Pure chemical (hypochlorite) bleaching resulted in higher lignin content of the pulp (kappa number 2-3). The ligninase-pretreated abaca pulp had higher density, thickness, burst factor, tear factor and bleaching length at 70 mins beating time and high freeness at zero beating time compared to the chemically bleached pulp. Multiple use of the same enzyme solution for pulp bleaching showed negligible loss of enzyme activity after five times of use; this indicates substantial savings in enzyme cost
