Sampling techniques for measuring selected fruit characters in cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.)

This study was conducted to provide future researchers in cashew with ideas on the optimum sample size needed to estimate the mean of a given character with certain level of precision. This would eliminate the hit- and-miss concept of attaining certain levels of accuracy associated with values obtained from the samples and assures the researcher of the reliability of his results. Results showed that for each level of precision, several combinations of trees and fruits per tree are possible. The optimum size was the combination that would be handled with the least cost. Based on the coefficient of variation, sampling six to eight fruits per tree is considered optimum for all the characters measured. The recommended number of trees and fruits per tree should be followed in future researches so that the desired precision would be attained. Sampling for fewer number of trees or fruits per tree would yield unreliable if not incorrect and misleading estimates of the means
