Yam-based cropping system in a sloping land

The cropping systems for yam were compared under a sloping land condition in Western Samar [Philippines] to determine their effects on the yield of yam, soil loss and the economics of production. When planted as a sole crop yam yield was highest (33.9 tons/ha) compared to when it was planted in combination with stringbeans + peanuts (26.1 tons/ha) or with corn (28.3 tons/ha). Individually, the yield of component crops were 5.97, 1.02, and 1.82 tons green pods per hectare, tons of pods per hectare, and tons dry grains per hectare, respectively. Net income-wise per hectare basis yam + stringbeans + peanut gave the highest income (P115,310) followed by yam + corn (P83,826) and yam alone (P79,820). The total soil loss was highest in yam alone (41.8 tons/ha) followed by yam + peanut + stringbeans (28.8 tons/ha) and yam + corn (24.2 tons/ha)
