Evaluation of potential plant materials against some seedborne fungal pathogens of corn

Water extracts from plant species reported to have medicinal and pesticidal properties were evaluated for their fungicidal activity against some seedborne fungal pathogens of corn. Crude extracts of 8 out of 84 plant species screened in vitro and in vivo showed inhibitory activity on the growth of some fungal pathogens of corn, crude extracts of garlic (Allium sativum L.) and garlic vine (Pseudocalymma alliaceum (Lam) Sandwitz) were found to be the most effective against Diplodia maydis; Helminthosporium maydis; Fusarium moniliforme, Sclerotium rolfsii; and Rhizoctonia solani. Garlic vine was found effective in four pathogens except on F. moniliforme. Luyang dilaw (Curcuma longa L.) was found very promising against R. solani. The degrees of growth inhibition exhibited by garlic, garlic vine and luyang dilaw were significantly different from other plant extracts. Growth inhibition using fungicides (Dithane M-45 and Benlate) at 10 ppm was not significantly different from the results obtained using garlic, garlic vine and luyang dilaw extracts
