Increasing production and productivity of coconut in RP [Republic of the Philippines] by balanced crop nutrition and fertilization: a sustainable positive option for the coconut industry

Presently, the Philippines has 2.4 million hectares of non-senile coconut stands. Recent findings of the Small Coconut Farms Development Project (SCFDP) (Magat, 1995) showed that the best farm management practices, notably balanced nutrition and fertilization, a yield of 2.8 tons copra per hectare can be achieved on the average. This gives a potential national crop production of 6.72 million tons per year. Considering the country's present coconut production volume, it could be losing 3-4 million tons of copra annually merely depending on rainfall as farm input. This translates into losses amounting to about P30 billion (US$1.17B) which should have been able to improve the purchasing power of the more than 20 million Filipinos directly and indirectly dependent on the industry, as well as sustain other coconut competent industries
