There are 97 strains that are maintained in the Azolla Gene Bank of the BSU-NAAP [Benguet State Univ.-National Azolla Action Program]-Subcenter. The gene bank consists of strains of different azolla species and hybrids that were collected and bred worldwide. The Subcenter developed the BSU 016 strain which is mass propagated and distributed to farmers in the Cordillera. Azolla is used as human food. One of the breakthroughs in azolla research in 1994 was the development of the azolla cake and cookies that garnered the "Most Creative Award" during the DOST-TAPI-BSU S and T Fair. In the municipalities of Bakun, Kapangan, Atok, Bokod and Kabayan, azolla is used as biofertilizers for rice by many farmers. In the Cordillera, there are 85 azolla-farmer cooperators. In 1995, the 1st Azolla Technofair was held at Sinacbat, Bakun where BSU, DA-CAR, NAAP and the municipality of Bakun gathered and established true partnership through the Azolla Technology. In this occasion, Bakun, Benguet was declared as an Azolla Municipality by its Sangguniang Bayan
