Participatory on-farm sweetpotato varietal evaluation selection in the Philippine highlands: initial results

In the Philippine highlands, conducted surveys show that the farmers and consumers have different varietal preferences which depend on location, cultural management and utilization practices. The "participatory approach" gives more attention to the specific needs and wants of farmers giving them a wide array of genotypes from where they could select their variety. The study site is Kapangan, Benguet where there are about 50 farmer-cooperators belonging to a subsistent and semisubsistent type of farming. In their selection, each farmers selected 2 to 10 clones for further evaluation. Farmers selected clones which have the following characters; high yield, purple flesh, early maturity, semi-compact growth, purple to red skin and drought resistance. Eating qualities were associated with skin color and dry matter. Some selections were rejected after the taste tests done. Surprisingly, resistance to pests and diseases is not a priority criteria in the selection. It was observed that farmers tend to select entries that resemble their local varieties
