In vitro regeneration of Cocos nucifera L. from immature inflorescences of tall cultivars

Results showed that there were differences among the three cultivars in terms of calloid formation, browning incidence and plantlet regeneration. Cultivars RIT and LAG produced transparent nodular calloids as early as two months from initial culture. Cultivar RIT showed higher calloid formation than LAG. Tissues of cv. BAO produced the least calloids and exhibited the highest browning incidence. The gradual reduction of the 2,4-D level and the simultaneous increase in the 2 iP concentration induced the formation of somatic embryos from the nodular calloids. Plantlets with single and multiple shoots were regenerated from cvs. LAG, BAO, and RIT after 17 months. Some plantlets of cvs. LAG and RIT have expanded leaves already while those from cv. BAO are still in the leaf scale stage. The plantlets are being maintained in the laboratory with 9 h photoperiod at 25-27 deg C until ready for ex vitro planting. The results confirm earlier findings that cloning the coconut is feasible. However, the low percentage of embryoid formation and germination still poses a limitation to large scale production of coconut via somatic embryogenesis
