Predicting yield of PSB rice cultivars and different nitrogen levels

Fertilizer nitrogen (N) can increase crop yield but represents a major share in the cash cost of production. Hence, an understanding of the processes involved in the crop response to N may help improve N fertilizer use efficiency. The ORYZA 1 model was evaluated for potential yield and related crop growth and yield to different N levels for Philippine Seed Board (PSB) cultivars Rc 2 and Rc 6. With appropriate leaf N content, crop developmental rates and weather inputs, the model predicted well the total above ground dry matter and grain yields of Rc 2 and Rc 6. Average dry season grain yields of Rc 2 and Rc 6 were 7.1 t/ha and 90-60-60 kg NPK/ha and 8.0 t/ha at 135-60-60 kg NPK/ha. No further increase in yield was obtained with 180-60-60 kg NPK/ha. Average differences between observe and predicted yields were 6.4 percent at 90 kg N/ha and 4.4 percent at 135 kg N/ha. Predicted leaf area index (LAI) increased with N rates up to 135 kg/ha. Peak LAI was observed at panicle initiation stage. Such information would be useful in formulating N application strategies to improve yield and N use efficiency
