Documentation and assessment of rootcrop production systems, its sustainability, and gender roles in the conservation of plant genetic resources

Batanes, the Philippines' smallest province located in the northernmost tip of the country, serves as a unique case study for the two concerns which in recent years have received global attention--sustainable production systems and resource conservation. This island province can be isolated from the mainland for the most part of the year and has evolved a production system involving rootcrops which has provided food security during these periods of isolation. The study focuses on the province's distinct ecological character, documents the production and utilization systems for rootcrops, and attempts to assess its sustainability and ecological impact, with emphasis on crop genetic diversity and soil resource use. Different methodologies were used in studying a pre-selected representative village, namely: (a) RRA, after review of secondary data, (b) household surveys, and (c) key informant interviews. The existing rootcrop production system involves a scheme largely determined by the unique biophysical and climatic environment of Batanes. The farm areas are located on slopes of up to 60 percent even when provincial data reports moderate and severe erosion in 61 percent and 20 percent of its total land area, respectively. Attempts by farmers to stop or mitigate the erosion process, especially in the cultivated areas, appear to be insufficient in the long run. A significant finding in the study is the diversity in rootcrop genetic resources which is not shared by any other province in the country. A valuable resource for plant breeding and crop improvement that would ensure future food security, this diversity is now threatened by both ecological and anthropogenic causes. Positive steps can still be done, beginning with future research and education of stakeholders, to prevent further degeneration of valuable soil and crop genetic resources
