Effect of plant population of virginia and desi tobacco on leaf yield in barley and on fallow land

Research investigations to study the effect of various plant population of virginia and desi tobacco on the leaf yield interplanted in barley and on fallow land was carried out at Malakandher Farm NWFP Agriculture University, Peshawar, during 1983-84. The results revealed that yield was increased when 35864 plants per hectare of virginia tobacco were planted as compared to 17582 plants per hectare. In case of barley planted virginia tobacco both normal and high plant populations were economical as compared to the same populations on fallow land. As far as number of leaves per plant, leaf size and stem thickness are concerned, there was a significant effect due to plant population and intercropping. A conclusion can be drawn that pure tobacco gave more yield as compared with intercropped tobacco.
