Bronchoalveolar lavage in the horse

The bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed on 8 horses. Of these four horses were normal while the remaining four animals had a lower airway disease diagnosed on clinical examination and lung function tests. Using a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope, the standing horses, sedated with xylazine and morphine, were examined for visible abnormalities like pus, hyperaemia and obstruction. 500 ml of sterile saline divided into two boluses of 250 ml each was then infused through bronchoscope into the lungs and aspirated with negative pressure. In normal horses over 76.25% of the infused saline was recovered as against a 42.25% recovery in diseased group. The quantitative cytology of the lavage fluid revealed a significant (P 0.05) decrease in alveolar macrophages with an increase in neutrophils (P 0.05) and eosinophilic count in diseased animals. Lymphocytes and mast cells remained unchanged. The findings suggest that macrophages decrease and neutrophils increase in lavage fluid of horses with respiratory disease.
