Mango plantation establishment in the sand dune areas

The climatic conditions of Ilocos [Philippines] is ideal for growing mango. To meet the increasing demand of the export and domestic market, the vast sand dune areas of Ilocos Norte could be utilized for planting. The sand dune is characterized with low water holding capacity, is slightly acidic and low in nutrients. Proper plantation establishment ensures early recovery and fruiting of mango trees. These include resoiling during planting and mulching with rice hull or rice straw. Manure or compost should also be incorporated at planting and yearly thereafter to increase the organic matter content and water holding capacity of the soil. Planting should be done at the start of the rainy season. During the dry season, irrigation every week should be done and every two weeks after the first year. At flowering, irrigation should be employed until one month before harvesting. Supplemental foliar fertilizer application should also be done. Other production practices such as inorganic fertilizer application, weeding and pruning should be practiced
